India and China have been engaged in a border standoff since May last year, wherein the Chinese troops attempted to alter the status quo. In protecting its sovereignty, 20 Indian soldiers had to sacrifice their lives in fighting China's PLA troops in the Galwan valley on June 15 last year.

Among the multiple locations, the disengagement of troops and machines have taken place from North and South of Pangong Tso, Gogra heights among others. However, the talk is yet to be held on Hot Springs, Demchok and Depsang. At least 12 rounds of military commander-level talks have been held so far.

The last time, the Army chief had visited Ladakh was in April this year.

On September 30, Gen Naravane said that there should have a boundary agreement between India and China for lasting peace along with the border areas.

While speaking at the PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry’s 116th annual session, the chief said, "We are well prepared to meet any misadventure that may occur."

For having lasting peace in the border areas, there needs to be a boundary agreement else such incidents will continue to occur.

He further said that the unprecedented developments required force mobilisation and immediate response. "Concurrently there was also a need to reinforce efforts of the government in mitigating the ongoing health crisis."

Talking about the alertness of the Indian armed forces, he said, "You would appreciate that each of the three Services -- the Army, Navy and the Air Force -- has its own set of challenges. The Indian Army is inactive operations throughout the year, safeguarding the territorial integrity and sovereignty of our nation, because of the peculiar environment of contested borders and an ongoing proxy war in the hinterland."

FinMin ready to hold clerical exams for PSBs in 13 regional languages

The Institute of Banking Personnel Selection's clerical recruitment exam for public sector banks could be held in 13 regional languages along with English and Hindi following a recommendation from the Finance Ministry in this regard.

The move is based on the recommendation made by the Committee constituted by the finance ministry to examine the possibility of holding the exams for clerical cadre in PSBs in regional languages.

The IBPS exams seeking to hire for 3,000 clerical posts in 11 banks had been put on hold in July this year and a committee set up after a controversy erupted over not keeping Kannada as a language medium option to write the test. Out of the 3,000 clerical posts, 407 posts are in Karnataka.

The appointments for clerical staff were being sought for the Indian Bank, Indian Overseas Bank, Punjab National Bank, Bank of Baroda, Bank of India, Bank of Maharashtra, Canara Bank, Central Bank of India, Punjab and Sind Bank, Union Bank of India and UCO Bank.

The committee further said that the decision of holding clerical exams in regional languages will also apply to future SBI vacancies.

The ongoing recruitment process of the State Bank of India for vacancies already advertised and for which preliminary exams had been held will be completed as advertised, the statement from the finance ministry said.

However, any clerical recruitments and other advertised hirings for the 12 public sector banks in future will be conducted in 13 regional languages.

‘Honest concerns’ about Pakistan ‘providing safe havens’ to terrorists: US

Washington: The United States has “honest concerns” with regard to Pakistan “for a long time” over the presence of “terrorist safe havens”, the Pentagon said on Thursday.

The previous Afghan government and the US have in the past criticised Pakistan for allowing the Taliban to cross over into Pakistan where they are provided safe havens and also receive medical treatment.

In a news briefing, Pentagon press secretary John Kirby said, “We've been very honest about our concerns with Pakistan for a long time, about the safe havens that exist on their side of the border along that spine. And those concerns are still valid today.”

He further said that Pakistan must remember to uphold its equities and responsibilities with respect to terrorism in “that part of the world”.

Kirby added that the United States is well within its rights to conduct airstrikes in Afghanistan as a means to curb the terror threat, even though its ground troops left the country over a month ago ending a 20-year war.

As Afghanistan's neighbour, Pakistan certainly has equities and responsibilities with respect to terrorism in that part of the world, Kirby was quoted as saying by the PTI news agency.

Also read: Senior Al-Qaeda leader killed in drone strike in Syria: US Report

"We continue to have candid conversations with Pakistani leaders about our concerns," he said in response to a question.

"I think it's important to continue to remind that the Pakistani people, likewise, have been rendered victim by terrorist threats that emanate from those groups and along that same border," he said, according to a PTI report.

Kirby also said that the United States is within its rights to continue drone strikes inside Afghanistan.

"We believe we have the authorities that we need to continue to protect the nation," he said.

For context, Pakistan has been under fire from political quarters across the globe for many years for providing a safe haven to terrorist outfits, including Al-Qaeda, among others. Most recently though, the erstwhile Ashraf Ghani-led government in Afghanistan, backed by the United States, raised its concerns about Islamabad providing the Taliban terrorists with a safe haven and even medical help when needed.

Meanwhile, the Taliban has accused the US of violating its Doha agreement during withdrawal of troops by continuing to fly drones over Afghan airspace.

Ranbir was dressed in a blue shirt and cargo trousers, while Alia was dressed in a white top and black boots. They were also seen on a higher floor watching the building progress.

Senior Al-Qaeda leader killed in drone strike in Syria: US Report

Washington: A senior al-Qaeda leader was killed in a drone airstrike in Syria, Fox News reported citing a US defence official.

Salim Abu-Ahmad, on September 20 was killed in a US airstrike near Idlib, Syria. He was responsible for planning, funding, and approving trans-regional al Qaeda attacks, according to Fox News.

US defence officials said. "There were no indications of civilian casualties."

US has carried out attacks in Idlib before targeting Al-Qaeda terrorists and the leader of the IS, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, who was hiding in the province after fleeing from eastern Syria.

Earlier, a military aircraft, presumably of the US Air Force on September 13 struck at two cars on the Syrian-Iraqi border, a source in the Iraqi militia, the Popular Mobilization Forces, told Sputnik.

"Two cars were hit by an airstrike on the border between Iraq and Syria," the source said. According to him, the strike was allegedly inflicted by the US Air Force.

Meanwhile, the Pentagon plans to rely on air strikes to prevent a resurgence of Al-Qaeda now that US troops have left Afghanistan, but experts and some lawmakers are skeptical about the effectiveness of the so-called "over-the-horizon" strategy, AFP reported.

Announcing the complete withdrawal of US troops in April, President Joe Biden vowed he would not allow a comeback of Al-Qaeda in Afghanistan, where Osama bin Laden hatched the September 11, 2001, attacks on New York and Washington.

Since then, the Pentagon has repeatedly claimed it is capable of keeping Al-Qaeda and Islamic State (IS) militants in Afghanistan in check through "over-the-horizon" strikes from US bases or aircraft carriers.

"Over-the-horizon operations are difficult but absolutely possible," Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin told the House Armed Services Committee on Wednesday, AFP quoted.

"And intelligence that supports them comes from a variety of sources, and not just US boots on the ground."

Chennai Super Kings displayed its dominance again to tame SunRisers Hyderabad by six wickets in the IPL 2021 clash on Thursday. While it has sealed its playoffs berth, here are the records scripted.

It was yet another satisfying performance from former champion Chennai Super Kings (CSK), as it nailed fellow former champion SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH) by six wickets in the 2021 Indian Premier League (IPL) at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium on Thursday. While SRH has been knocked out of the playoffs race, CSK has sealed its place in the process. Consequently, we look at some of the records scripted.

Gaikwad-du Plessis score the most
CSK opener Ruturaj Gaikwad and Faf du Plessis contributed to a 75-run stand. As a result, it has become the most successful opening pair of the side in any season, scoring more than 590 runs, going past Michael Hussey-Suresh Raina (587 in 2013).

CSK scripts its best against SRH
With this win, CSK now has a win percentage of 75 against SRH, which is its best in the tournament traditionally. Overall, it is the second-best, with Mumbai Indians (MI) leading with 75.86 against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR).

MS Dhoni joins a select list
Dhoni remained unbeaten in this successful run chase, which was his 24th instance in the IPL. It is the joint-most, along with his CSK teammate Ravindra Jadeja, in a successful run chase.

Match summary
Winning the toss and inviting SRH to bat, the side was restricted to 134/7 despite Wriddhiman Saha's impressive 44, while pacer Josh Hazlewood claimed three. In reply, CSK chased it down with ease, thanks to a good show by the openers (Ruturaj Gaikwad and Faf du Plessis), winning by six wickets and sealing its playoffs berth, while SRH was knocked out.

IPL 2021, SRH vs CSK: Chennai eases past by 6 wickets to seal playoffs berth, Hyderabad knocked out

Chennai Super Kings has dominated against Sunrisers Hyderabad to win by six wickets in IPL 2021. CSK has sealed its playoffs berth, while SRH has been knocked out.

It was a dominating performance by former champion Chennai Super Kings (CSK), as it breezed past fellow former champion Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) by six wickets in the 2021 Indian Premier League (IPL) at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium on Thursday. With this win, CSK has booked its place in the playoffs, while SRH has been knocked out.

Winning the toss, CSK skipper MS Dhoni elected to bowl as he made a change, bringing in Dwayne Bravo for Sam Curran. Meanwhile, SRH skipper Kane Williamson maintained the same side.

SRH was off to a shaky start, losing Jason Roy (2) in the fourth over to pacer Josh Hazlewood for 23. At the same time, Williamson (11) departed 20 runs later to leg-spinner Ravindra Jadeja in the seventh.

The SRH batters lacked true partnerships and kept departing after every 20 odds runs. It lost a couple more by 74, in the form of Priyam Garg (7) and Wriddhiman Saha (44), despite the latter looking promising with his batting.

While a 35-run stand between Abhishek Sharma (18) and Abdul Samad (18) ensued, both fell in the seventh over to Hazlewood by 110. Seven runs later, Jason Holder (4) also departed to pacer Shardul Thakur in the 19th, as Rashid Khan's unbeaten 17 ensured a score of 134/7 for SRH.

CSK put six bowlers into the attack, with Hazelwood claiming 3/24, his best IPL figures. In the meantime, Bravo turned out to be the most economical of all.

ALSO READ: IPL 2021, KKR vs PBKS preview- Kolkata looks to continue its unremitting form against an irregular Punjab

As CSK came out of the chase, the openers Ruturaj Gaikwad (45) and Faf du Plessis (41) were off to a ruthless start, contributing 75 runs for the opening wicket before the former fell to pacer Jason Holder in the 11th over. However, it was followed by a 28-run stand, as Moeen Ali (17) departed next to leg-spinner Rashid Khan in the 15th over.

The following over saw Suresh Raina (2) fall at 107 to Holder, while just a couple of runs later, du Plessis departed in the same over. Although SRH did manage to bring the equation close in the final couple of overs, Ambati Rayudu (17*) and Dhoni (14*) held their nerves, while the latter finished it off in style, courtesy of a monstrous six to pacer Siddhart Kaul. SRH utilised six bowlers, with Holder claiming three, while spinner Abhishek had the best economy.
Brief scores: SRH 134/7 (Saha-44; Hazlewood- 3/24) lost to CSK 139/4 in 19.4 overs (Gaikwad- 45, du Plessis- 41; Holder- 3/27) by six wickets.

IPL 2021, SRH vs CSK LIVE UPDATES: Chennai wins by 6 wickets, courtesy MS Dhoni finisher

Hello and welcome to Asianet Newsable' live coverage of Match 44 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 between former champions SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at the Sharjah Cricket Ground on Thursday. SRH is virtually out of the playoffs race, while a defeat here would officially end its pursuit. On the other hand, a win for CSK would seal its playoffs berth.

CSK is currently at the top of the table, with eight wins from ten matches and 16 points. SRH, on the other hand, is at rock bottom, registering just a couple of wins from ten and has collected only four points. Therefore, this match has ideally termed the clash of two poles, despite the two sides belonging to the same geographical pole.

The two teams have met each other on 16 moments, with CSK having a lead of 12-4, while in 15 matches in the tournament to date, CSK has an authority of 11-4. Of the three games in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), CSK has a lead of 2-1, while they have met once in Sharjah, with CSK emerging victorious.

The Sharjah weather is sultry, with a temperature of 38 degrees and 50% humidity. The track would be slow and has been the trend this season. However, a shorter ground could somewhat assist the batters. Winning the toss and batting first is ideal, but it won't be a bad toss to lose either. Read the match preview here....
