Charanjit Singh Channi to be sworn-in as Punjab Chief Minister at 11 am, two deputy CMs to be appointed

Congress MLA Charanjit Singh Channi is slated to be sworn-in as Punjab`s 16th Chief Minister on Monday (September 20, 2021) at 11 am.

The oath taking ceremony will be held in Chandigarh and as per sources the gathering at the ceremony will be small and some leaders will also not be attending.

Meanwhile, Sukhjinder Randhawa, whose name made rounds for the CM post, has been appointed as the deputy CM along with Brahm Mohindra.

A day after Captain Amarinder Singh resigned following a bitter power tussle in the party, Channi’s name emerged after a series of meetings, making him the first Dailt to hold the top post in the state.   

Channi, who met Governor Banwarilal Purohit to stake his claim to the top job in the poll-bound state was elected as the leader of the Congress Legislature Party.

Channi a three-time MLA from Rupnagar's Chamkaur Sahib was Technical Education Minister in the outgoing Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh's cabinet.

Meanwhile, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi is unlikely to attend the oath-taking ceremony, news agency ANI reported.

The party's Punjab in-charge Harish Rawat said on Sunday that there will be two deputy chief ministers in the state. "One deputy chief minister will be from Jat Sikh community and the other will be from the Hindu community," he was quoted as saying by ANI.

Also, AICC Treasurer Pawan Kumar Bansal has confirmed through a tweet the names of Sukhjinder Randhawa and Brahm Mohindra and congratulated the two leaders for their elevation as Deputy CMs of Punjab.

Following months of infighting between Amarinder Singh and Punjab Congress chief Navjot Singh Sidhu, the former on Saturday stepped down from the post of Punjab Chief Minister.
