The Israel Defense Forces overnight Saturday-Sunday carried out another round of retaliatory airstrikes in the Gaza Strip, following the second rocket attack in less than 24 hours.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) on September 11 in a Twitter post announced that the military intercepted a rocket from the Gaza strip by the Iron Dome missile defence system.

According to the Times of Israel, a 29-year-old sustained a light head wound after he fell while running towards a bomb shelter.

The rocket triggered warning sirens in the Eshkol region and local residents reported hearing several explosions. There were no reports of injuries or damage.

In a separate tweet, the Israeli military informed that in response, the IDF struck a Hamas underground rocket production workshop, weapons storage site, training facility and terrorist tunnel.

Tension between Israel and the Palestinians has risen over the past week, after six Palestinian militants escaped from a maximum-security Israeli jail on Monday. Israeli forces have since captured four of the inmates, Reuters reported.

According to reports, tear gas was used against the protestors and several people were injured. The Palestinian Red Crescent reported that it treated around eight people suffering from injuries from rubber bullets and another 15 cases of tear gas inhalation during clashes, said ANI report.

Drawing Israeli air strikes, Gaz militants fired a rocket into Israel on Friday when two of the prisoners were apprehended and then again on Saturday, after two more escaped inmates were caught. The Israeli military said it struck targets belonging to Hamas, the Islamist armed group that rules Gaza. There were no reports of casualties.

A fragile truce between Israel and Hamas ended 11 days of fierce fighting in May in which at least 250 Palestinians and 13 in Israel were killed.
